It plays a role in the formation of <strong>haemoglobin<\/strong>, a protein present in red blood cells that facilitates the transportation of oxygen to all tissues, in the formation of <strong>myoglobin<\/strong>, a protein present in muscles and certain important enzymes, such as <strong>cytochromes<\/strong>. Iron is also an important element for the <strong>correct development of the immune system<\/strong> and <strong>normal cognitive function<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases, however, there may be factors that lower <strong>normal levels of iron in the blood<\/strong>. When iron levels are below physiological levels, we are dealing with an <strong>iron deficiency<\/strong>. This condition helps to define what, in medical terms, is referred to as <strong>sideropenia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Iron deficiency: causes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <strong>iron deficiency<\/strong> can occur mainly for 3 reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><p><strong>Low intake of the mineral through diet.<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Physiological conditions that lead to an increased need<\/strong> (pregnancy, breastfeeding, baby growth, menstrual cycle).<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Pathological conditions<\/strong> (bleeding, diseases that modify the <a href=\"https:\/\/sideral.hu\/en\/when-it-is-used\/iron-absorption\/\"><strong>intestinal absorption<\/strong><\/a> <strong>of iron<\/strong>).<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Iron deficiency: symptoms and consequences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many <strong>typical symptoms of an iron deficiency<\/strong>, but amongst the most common, are the feeling of <strong>general weakness<\/strong>, <strong>irritability<\/strong>, <strong>headache<\/strong>, <strong>shortness of breath<\/strong> and <strong>pale skin and mucous membranes<\/strong> are the most common. In some cases, <strong>iron deficiency<\/strong> can <strong>weaken the nails<\/strong> and some people have reported a continuous feeling of cold hands and feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The severity of <strong>iron deficiency<\/strong>-related disorders depends on many factors: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the amount of iron circulating in the blood;<\/li><li>the amount of iron present in the body&#8217;s reserves;<\/li><li>age (children<span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> need more iron to support growth);<\/span><\/li><li>presence of other diseases.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the iron consumed through diet is not sufficient or when physiological or pathological conditions produce a lower amount of iron circulating in the blood (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sideral.hu\/en\/when-it-is-used\/\">serum iron<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/minisito.local\/en\/when-it-is-used\/low-sideremia\/\"><\/a>) and, consequently, a possible lower <a href=\"https:\/\/sideral.hu\/en\/when-it-is-used\/low-haemoglobin\/\"><strong>haemoglobin<\/strong><\/a> level it is necessary to intervene to restore the normal physiological levels of this nutrient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you maintain normal iron levels in the blood?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under normal health conditions, a <strong>varied and balanced<\/strong> <strong>diet<\/strong> guarantees the <strong>right amount of iron for the body<\/strong>. However, in some cases, it may be necessary to address <strong>iron deficiency<\/strong> with a nutritional supplement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a
